Author Visits

Storytime at Red Bug Lake Park

Red Bug Lake Park

I am an educator/librarian, author, and nonprofit leader.

I LOVE sharing my love of reading!

A school visit by a children’s book author is an exciting way to promote literacy. I love to visit schools and share with students the joy of writing and reading. I a youth services librarian for twenty years, a nonprofit leader for ten years, and in 2015 I published my first children’s book, Peas Let her be a Princess.  As a librarian and nonprofit leader, I have given more than 6,000 children’s programs to approximately 150,000 children!  And the number just keeps getting bigger.  I’ve loved every audience! My author visits are designed to fit each specific event or school including curricular needs. Speaking topics include: fun with words, rhyme time, the writing process, the self-publishing process, and the importance of reading.  Each presentation includes important skills and ideas students and teachers can carry back to the classroom. I have as much fun talking to round tables of young authors as I do to large school assemblies. Contact me. I am always interested in helping you make an author visit happen.

Presentations (can be tailored to different grade levels):

Fun with Words – During this presentation, I will share my love of words and writing.  I believe curiosity and an open mind is crucial to the creative process.  I will discuss this process by taking a humorous look at my life as a curious kid reporter for my grandmother’s trailer park, a middle school poet, and a beanie bag entrepreneur.  The presentation will conclude with the children joining me in the creative process as we attempt to write a story on the spot.  By the end of the program, children will be inspired and ready to write their own story!

Rhyme Time – This program focuses on having fun with rhymes.  I will use fun and interactive exercises to engage the children in the rhyming process.  Poems will be written; ALL will have fun!

The Writing Process – Writing those first words can be hard.  During this program I will help the children discover their creativity.  Using simple and innovative writing exercises I will lead the children to feeling confident in putting words onto paper.

The Self-Publishing Process (typically for teacher/parent events) - During this program, I will guide the audience through the self-publishing maze.  I will share loads of information to prepare the audience for this complicated process.

The Importance of Reading (typically for teacher/parent events) – During this program, I will share important information about reading to young children. The audience will leave inspired to read aloud to their kids and enjoy family read-alouds.
